Software Engineer

Education: Bachelors or advanced degreees required in Computer and/or Electrical Engineering

Job Description:
Responsible for code production and testing, the software engineer for Valco Cincinnati will be involved in control and verification equipment for glue dispensing in the paper converting industry. Products are microcontroller-based and custom designed for specific applications and industries.

The software engineer is responsible for creating and maintaining C++ embedded microcontroller programs on Freescale chip sets such as the Coldfire family for CAN network management of multiple devices all communicating with the touch-screen hardware. These devices include sensors, DC motors and glue valves. When the devices require their own hardware/software interfaces, these must be created and maintained by the software engineer. The HMI terminal interfaces with the Freescale microcontroller program.

For time critical signals the designs can include one or more programmable logic devices. Therefore the engineer has to able to understand and write code for CPLDs and FPGAs in Verilog or VHDL . In addition to this it is also important that the programmer understands microprocessor hardware and is able to calculate worst case timing scenarios.

The software engineer reports to the Electronics Engineering Manager and work in a team environment with circuit board layout engineers, hardware design engineers, sensor design engineers, etc. In addition, they are responsible for field-testing their work and debugging it throughout its life.

Valco Melton is a division of Valco Cincinnati, Inc., a Cincinnati , Ohio based designer and manufacturer of adhesive systems for the packaging and paper converting industries. With a 50-year history in the business, the company provides an exciting development environment with the opportunity to make a significant business and technology impact with a team of about 50 other engineers of various disciplines worldwide. With markets on all major continents, opportunities to travel and interface with customers and colleagues make for broad and rewarding work.

Sensor Design Engineer

Education: Advanced degree in photonics or related sensor technology
Experience: 2-5 years design experience

Job Description:
The Sensor Design Engineer is responsible for basic research and development toward creating and improving sensor devices. Devices include color code reading on cartons and paper, barcode readers and various devices for the inspection of hot and cold adhesives including optical , laser, microwave and capacitive sensors. Background must include familiarity with light sources, lenses , lasers , opto-electronics and spectral analysis. Some mechanical design experience is also necessary to create functioning devices from theoretical principles and laboratory experiments.

The Sensor Design Engineer will be an expert in the physical principles of optics and electronics . The Sensor Design Engineer must also be able to specify and source appropriate components and laboratory equipment in order to do experiments, built prototypes and test theories. A qualified engineer will come from a background designing industrial sensors for a variety of applications and will understand the limitations of difficult environments on sensor capability.

The Sensor Design Engineer reports to the Electronics Engineering Manager and works in a team environment with circuit board layout engineers, hardware design engineers, software design engineers, etc. In addition, the Sensor Design Engineer is responsible for field-testing prototypes and finished products as well as maintaining the product through its life cycle.
