From its U.S. headquarters, Valco Cincinnati directs global facilities. It remains unified in its vision by maintaining a close corporate culture.

From simple hand-operated gluers to sophisticated, high-speed, microprocessor-controlled adhesive application systems, Valco Cincinnati says it offers one of the most extensive selections of adhesive application equipment available from a single supplier. “Dispensing valves and high-speed, multi-function applicators cover every type of pattern requirement or application method,” it says.

Founded in 1952, Valco Cincinnati operates several divisions. Valco's consumer products division markets sealants, adhesives, cleaners, waxes, and polishes for the automotive industry. Its engineered products group designs products for special applications, and specializes in the design and integration of precision metering, mixing, and dispensing systems.

The electronic products group manufactures quality-assurance products for packagers and paper converters. The company has manufacturing facilities in Cincinnati and in California , Germany , and Spain .

“Integrating these global operations is our biggest challenge. It is critical to maintain the same vision and focus throughout the organization,” explains Paul Chambers, vice president of sales and marketing. “We're a privately held, family business, and we keep an open line of communication. Any employee can talk to anyone in the company; we don't have a lot of bureaucracy. I regularly communicate with our CEO, CFO, and managers around the world. We all know what our corporate goal is.”

Keeping its product line competitive – technically advanced and cost-competitive – is another focus for Valco Cincinnati. Chambers says the company targets niche markets, as well as special projects with major corporations.

“Our product specialists are experts at solving manufacturing problems through innovative technology that we develop,” Chambers explains. “We have an unbelievable array of applicators. We take components and install them on existing machinery, or we can design, develop, and integrate an entire work cell.”

Valco Cincinnati has worked with many of its customers for more than 30 years. Chambers says some of its customers in the corrugated industry, for example, continue to look to Valco Cincinnati to upgrade their existing manufacturing processes with new Valco technology.

“We are arguably the second-largest adhesive systems manufacturer in the world, but we're small enough to add a personal touch,” he notes. “That's been a big part in cultivating long-term relationships.”

The company distributes its products through more than 50 worldwide distributors. Chambers notes that the company has introduced new hot melt and cold glue products annually.

Valco Cincinnati partnered with Shure-Glue Systems and its recent acquisition, Melton S.L., to develop its hot melt systems, components, and support equipment to grow its market share throughout the world. A wide range of hot melt units are equipped with either piston pumps or motor-driven gear pumps with several relief valve options.

Chambers says an integrated auto-feeder system reduces operator intervention, resulting in more productivity and less downtime for end-users. “In the cold glue market, we've introduced a product called the Flexoseal OT-12 gluing system with corrugated industry specific software,” Chambers explains. “This system employs Valco's leading glue-dispensing technology with a nice touch-screen operator data-entry system that is very user-friendly.”

“We invest a tremendous amount of capital into R&D each year,” Chambers says. “It's essential that we do, because there's [such] stiff competition in an oftentimes mature market.”

In both the long and short term, Valco Cincinnati wants to maintain high levels of excellence in its products and services, Chambers says. “We want to satisfy our customers' expectations every day and defeat all challenges,” he stresses. “We believe there are several good competitors out there, but we will earn the respect of our industry and our important customers as we continue to grow our business.”

Valco Gives Wiri Better Glue Fault Detection

Valco gluing systems have been fitted to all the flexo folder gluers at Wiri, in a move that Maintenance Supervisor, Murray Troup, said will give the site better quality control of their gluing process.

“We trialed them with a glue detection system on a new machine we installed earlier in 2006, and since then, we have installed them on all our other machines – with great success. It has resolved a lot of the gluing issues we had. The Valco system will detect a glue fault in the glue pattern, length and lack of glue. It sprays a fluorescent chemical onto the side of the box, which identifies the box. It lets the machine run on to the counter rejector end and an ultra violet light picks up the fluorescent spray. The operator removes the offending box and away he goes.”

Previously, said Murray, the side had a Smofad photographic system which wasn’t as user-friendly as the new system. “There were a lot of errors going through and the operators were missing them. You’d get an alarm to say there was a fault but you had to search for the offending box. Now the operator only has one button to push, which says: ‘OBTAIN NEW GLUE LINK’. The first box comes through, reads it, you press ACCEPT and away you go.”

He said the cost was comparable and the system is a lot easier to use and requires very little intervention.

MCP-4 Adhesive System Pattern Control

The MCP-4 is a low-cost, full-featured adhesive system pattern control. It offers 4-channel outputs, each capable of multiple glue patterns, 4 product sensor inputs and optional integral flow control. Program changes and adjustments can be made "on-the-fly" with results immediately on the product. Features include “plug-and-run” connectors and compact design for fast and easy installation.

The MCP-4 can be used with an extensive selection of Valco’s cold-glue or hot melt adhesive dispensing valves including high-speed non-contact, spot gluing, fine-line gluing, and ribbon-pattern gluing. The MCP-25MS and MCP-12 with OT-12 touch-screen interface control systems are modular, microprocessor control systems, designed to allow users to easily program and control adhesive application systems.

Offering unequaled flexibility and performance, they are available with industry-specific software and component packages that perform additional functions such as jam prevention, batch count and low-adhesive-supply alarm. Additional specifics include the ability to perform glue pattern inspection, bar code reading, window detection, skew detection, color detection and metal (foil) detection. 300 Series Miniature Cold Glue Valve

Valco's new 300-series electric valves offer unprecedented speed in a 15mm wide package. With advanced solenoid technology, the 300-series valves can apply extremely short patterns at high machine speeds. An adjustable stroke version is also available to enhance dotting performance.

Life cycles exceeding 1-billion are made possible with a lightweight plunger featuring a carbide ball seating on a ceramic nozzle tip. The 300-series valve is ideally suited for applications in the envelope, mailer, and folding carton industries as well as other high-speed graphics and paper converting uses. Metso is licensing Glue Assisted Turn-Up Patents to Valco Cincinnati, Inc.

Metso Paper, Tissue Business Line, has entered into a license agreement with Valco Cincinnati, Inc., Ohio, USA. The agreement enables Valco Cincinnati to market, manufacture and deliver Metso Paper's tissue turn-up system to the global market.

Metso has developed and patented technology to improve the efficiency of the turn-ups in high-speed tissue machines. This system is using spraying of particular glues onto the running web going into the nip of the tissue reel, thus enhancing the turn-up of the web.

Through the Metso license, Valco Cincinnati is now able to offer its "Tissue Tack & Reel" glue applying system for the turn-up operation in tissue production to all clients worldwide. The license agreement enables Valco to apply Metso's turn-up technology based on several patents.
